Abstract

Abstract:  This study aims to examine the relationship between language and socio-cultural structure in the text of Sri Sultan HB X's speech on the one-decade anniversary of Yogyakarta's specialness. This research is qualitative with Fairclough's critical discourse analysis method. The dimensions of the analysis include text, discourse practices, social culture according to Fairclough's analytical framework. These dimensions connect from the level of the text to the level of socio-cultural practices. The results showed that Sri Sultan HB X wanted to describe Yogyakarta as having a good standard of living, and its people having Javanese philosophy applied in life. Representation of socio-cultural actions to reinforce the privileges of Yogyakarta is shown through efforts to adapt culture and traditions to new values. The figure of Sri Sultan HB X as the regional head and king was shown so that the speeches delivered were always heard by the people.
